Fans who enjoyed Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 romp Pacific Rim will have to wait just a little bit longer to catch its sequel. Deadline is reporting that the John Boyega-starring Pacific Rim: Uprising has been pushed back one month.
Instead of hitting theaters on February 23, 2018, the flick will now be gracing theaters on March 23 of the same year. The competition it’ll be going up against is a bit questionable. Coming out that same weekend is Jamie Foxx’s Robin Hood reboot. Admittedly, given that no one has been asking for that film, we think it’s a pretty safe bet that Uprising will take that weekend. The weekend after, however, it will be going up against Steven Spielberg’s juggernaut Ready Player One, which is expected to do all sorts of business.
The date that Uprising settled on previously unclaimed weekend, but it was only one week after the release of Black Panther. Marvel films tend to have pretty long tails at the box office, and as such, we can see why they thought it best to change it up. As it stands, Pacific Rim: Uprising will undoubtedly lose some real business to Ready Player One in week two, but in its first week, it’ll hopefully be making plenty. Had it kept its original date, they would still be in the wake of Black Panther, which would likely have huge impact on its business.
It’s not a perfect plan, but no plan is. The way the industry is right now, every weekend is in arm’s distance of another big budget film, and it’s just a matter of picking your battles. We’ll be curious to see if this is one that Pacific Rim: Uprising can win.
Pacific Rim: Uprising is the monster/mech flick that is set to be directed by Steven S. Deknight, and will star John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.
