Paul Greengrass’ Netflix Film 22 July Gets A Tense Official Trailer

Netflix is working to up their film game. While the past year has seen the most original films ever released on the streaming service, there’s no denying that the quality has been…inconsistent at best. Sure, films like Bright and Death Note look fantastic visually, but a good number of them look right at home on networks like Hallmark and Lifetime, with scripts rarely rising above “good enough to shoot.”

This is a reputation they’re hoping to shake off in the coming year or so. In fact, over the next several months, we’ll be seeing some potential awards contenders hit both theaters and the streaming service. One such film comes from The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass, and this time around, he’s covering some pretty heavy material.

Below is the official synopsis for 22 July:

“In 22 JULY, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Paul Greengrass (CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, UNITED 93) tells the true story of the aftermath of Norway’s deadliest terrorist attack. On 22 July 2011, 77 people were killed when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a leadership camp for teens. 22 JULY uses the lens of one survivor’s physical and emotional journey to portray the country’s path to healing and reconciliation.”

All in all, this film looks like it can end up as a classic, though we’ll have to wait and see how the serious subject matter is handled — with deft or sledgehammer. Luckily, we only have about a month to wait until we find out.
