Pixar To Focus On Original Content After Toy Story 4

I don’t want anyone to misunderstand me. I love sequels. You’re talking to someone who runs a blockbuster-focused site after all. A few weeks back, we spent hours discussing the 22nd film in an ongoing franchise, for crying out loud. It’d be hypocritical to say Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and that the way forward is to make 100% original I.P.s, because as history has proven, good sequels are possible and we will pay to see them more than we’ll pay to see original content.

All that being said, like a lot of fans out there, I’ve wanted to see Pixar focus more on original content in recent years. Over the course of the past decade alone, there have been six sequels and five original films coming out of the studio. Now, that’s still a good number of original movies, but I couldn’t help but feel like there was a whole lot more magic to the likes of Up, Inside Out, and Coco than there was for projects like Monsters University, Finding Dory, and Incredibles 2. Of course, their track record wasn’t perfect — Brave and The Good Dinosaur weren’t exactly amazing — but at least they were taking risks with those.

Later this year, we’ll be getting Toy Story 4, which is a film many fans are nervous would end up ruining the perfect trilogy they closed out back in 2010, and there has been concern that Pixar would turn into a big sequel production house.

Well, luckily, that ain’t the case. According to Pixar producer Mark Nielsen, there’s been a lot of optimism about the future of the studio ever since Pete Docter took over as Chief Creative Officer after John Lasseter stepped down:

“He’s really looking out for the new voices and really loading up the development pool.   It’s all original films after this one right now.”

Let’s hope they’re able to maintain that high bar of quality we’ve come to expect from the studio. Are you happy to see Pixar focusing more on original content? Let us know your thoughts down below!
