Ralph Continues To Break The Box Office

This past weekend saw no major releases at the box office, allowing the handful of big movies already present to duke it out for the top spot.

Ralph Breaks the Internet repeated its success, dropping 54.2% from its previous weekend to hit $25.8 million in its second weekend. Thus far, the film has hit $119.3 million domestically and $206.9 million worldwide. This may not seem too hot, but given how strategic Disney is with its foreign release schedule, I’m sure we’ll see a pretty solid trickle-up in terms its overall receipts in weeks to come. As it stands, in terms of domestic fare, it looks to be on par with Moana, which took in $248.8 million domestically and $643.3 million worldwide. This would be a large step up from Wreck-It Ralph‘s $471.2 million back in 2012 and a surefire success for the House of Mouse.

At no. 2, we have The Grinch continuing its strong performance with $17.7 million in its fourth week, pretty much proving that the holiday season is doing wonders for it. The film has taken in $203.5 million domestically and $268.3 million worldwide. It may not seem like a whole lot, and it’s not compared to most other Illumination films. But given its $75 million price tag, it’s hard to argue with it being an overall success.

At no. 3, we have Creed II taking in $16.8 million, dropping 52.7% from its first weekend. Given its $50 budget, and its $92.5 million in worldwide box office receipts, it’s well on its way to being profitable, especially since it’s only opened in a handful of foreign markets. In the weeks to come, when it does open, it’ll be sure to see a substantial uptick.

As of this writing, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has grossed $519.6 million worldwide. Compared to the first film’s $800 million-plus haul, it’s definitely a substantial step down, but it seems likely this will flip the film over into the profitable range for Warner Bros., ultimately justifying its existence, even if fans weren’t huge…fans of the movie itself.
