Ratatouille Director Brad Bird Debunks Fan Theory

If you’re a Pixar fan, chances are you’ve seen your fair share of fan theories from around the web. Hell, if you’re an animation fan in any way, shape, or form, YouTube is littered with countless fan theories that attempt to reshape your perspective of a property and the characters that populate its world.

Such is also the case with Ratatouille, the 2007 Pixar film that followed a rat named Remy and his foray into the pretentious food world in Paris, France. In the film, the climax culminates with food critic Anton Ego trying out Remy’s dish and falling in love with it because it reminds him of his mother’s cooking.

Some eagle-eyed fans have noticed that a lot of the props used in the flashback to Ego’s house are eerily similar to the ones used in the house Remy lived in at the start of the film. The theory posits that Remy lived in Anton’s mothers’ home and made the ratatouille dish like his mother’s because he watched her cook it.

So, is this the case? Did director Brad Bird really have it all figured out? Well, the filmmaker took to Twitter to debunk this theory, saying:

“Well, I’d love to confirm that we were ultra-deep thinkers and that there was a narrative behind the narrative, but…

“When I took over the film we had a hellacious deadline and only 2 of the films many sets were built. Truth is we were just trying to reuse props where we could.”

This makes a lot of sense, as Ratatouille was quite infamous. Before Bird took over production as director from Jan Prinkava and Bob Peterson after a troubled development. Given that they were careening to a deadline, them trying to reuse assets whenever possible is not a crazy idea.

What do you think of this revelation? Are you sad the theory isn’t true? Let us know down below!
