Ready Player One’s Lena Waithe Signs Deal With Showtime

Lena Waithe continues her run as a rising star in the writing world.

As of Tuesday, the Emmy-winning writer (Master Of None) has just signed a first-look deal with Showtime. Waithe will be developing comedy and drama projects for the premium cable network in which she will both write and produce. Waithe explained to Variety the excitement she feels for the deal:

“I have been a fan of Showtime for as long as I can remember… They make shows that most networks wouldn’t touch and they’ve never been afraid of taking risks. I look forward to introducing my Showtime family to fresh and exciting new voices. I want to make content that will challenge audiences and take them places they never thought TV could go. It’s going to be a fun ride.”

Showtime’s President of Programming Gary Levine expressed his joy about having Waithe be a part of the team:

“We fell in love with Lena’s voice when we ordered her pilot for The Chi three years ago, and we have watched in awe at her powerful impact on our industry and our culture… Lena is a creative force of nature and we are delighted that the force will be with us as she makes Showtime her creative home.”

Waithe has written for such shows as M.O. Diaries, Hello Cupid, and Bones before her winning the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Master Of None. She went on to create The Chi and has also worked in front of the camera in projects like The Comeback, Transparent, This Is Us, Dear White People and this year’s Steven Spielberg-directed Pop Culture epic Ready Player One.

Waithe’s latest script, Queen & Slim, starring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), will be going into production this January at Universal.
