Rian Johnson And Daniel Craig’s Murder Mystery Film Knives Out Gets Sold

Last week, I reported on the news that Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig were shopping around a new film at the Toronto Film Festival, and it looks like they’ve already closed a deal to get the thing made, TheWrap reports.

The project in question is a murder mystery film called Knives Out, and it will be directed by Johnson and star Craig in the lead role. Johnson will also be co-writing the picture with his producing partner Ram Bergman. The film is being described as a contemporary murder mystery stylized as a classic whodunnit, and in it, Craig will be playing a detective assigned to crack the case.

They are aiming to shoot this film in November, and while they assure Eon Production and MGM that it will not interfere with Bond 25‘s supposed December production, it is a bit odd that Johnsons saw Bond’s potential delay as an opening to approach Craig for the lead role.

“I have been a huge fan and always wanted to work with him and as I worked on the script, trying to get it right, Ram and I were wringing our hands over who could be the detective,” Johnson said to Deadline. “Then, serendipitously, we heard Daniel might have a small window, and it worked out. He’s an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot.”

While Johnson has been quite the controversial figure among Star Wars fans since Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theaters, I’m sure there are many of his fans out there who will be happy to return to the genre that made him a cult favorite filmmaker.
