One of the biggest bones of contention among fans when it comes to Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the way Luke Skywalker was portrayed. Many fans called this portrayal of Luke as a betrayal of the character. Even Mark Hamill himself calls this version of his character ‘Jake’ and didn’t appear to care for the direction that writer/director Rian Johnson took the character.
Now in response to a post on Twitter by a fan, Rian Johnson has responded by declaring that his Luke Skywalker is 100% consistent with the Luke that was presented in the Original Trilogy. Check it out below.
Hot take: Luke is in fact 100% consistent with his character (not the way he’s described in marketing blurbs, but his actual, based-on-his-words-and-actions character) from the OT. I’ll be at the bar if you need me.

So there you have it, folks. Johnson has declared that your own opinions on Luke’s character or even that of Mark Hamill are irrelevant, because Rian Johnson has spoken. Ha.
Ok, so I think there are going to a be a lot of fans that disagree with this and it simply reinforces my opinion that Rian Johnson’s take on Star Wars is simply miles apart from my own and many other fans.
I won’t go into many, many examples of where Luke was inconsistent with his original trilogy appearance. What I will say is that I’m slightly confused Johnson even thought to say this, after all, a character after 30 years can be a different person than they were before. However, if he truly believes that Luke is consistent, then I must strongly disagree.
I’m sure you readers can think of many examples in the comments below, but I’ll leave you with one small one. There’s no way that Luke Skywalker would ever call a Lightsaber a Laser Sword.
Does anyone back Rian Johnson’s Comments, or do you agree with me that he is very wrong here? Sound off as always in the usual place below.
