Rian Johnson Won’t Talk About His Next Star Wars Movie Yet As He Is Still Deep In The Writing Process

It was pretty quickly after The Last Jedi was finished that Lucasfilm announced director Rian Johnson would be developing his own (non-Skywalker) Star Wars trilogy.

Since then we haven’t herd too much more about it and the next trilogy out the gates from Lucasfilm is from Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss. So what is happening with Johnson’s trilogy? The director recently spoke with Uproxx about his new movie Knives Out and they jokingly asked Johnson how his Star Wars trilogy would end.

“[Laughs] I’ll tell you exactly how they end! An iris shot to a blue credit. I’m where I can’t say anything about it. Still completely in process with it.”

He was then asked if it ruins his process to say anything?

“It’s just, I don’t know. ‘It’s a process’ means it’s a process. So that means it could change, it could shift. There are a bunch of moving parts with it.”

Asked what he would have said three years ago about Knives Out?

“I probably would have given you some answer and then it would’ve been totally different from the movie that came out. You know, it’s something that you write and you work on.”

I totally get why Johnson would be reluctant to even give a tease on what he has planned. As a writer, his vague ideas may evolve into something else entirely as he goes through the writing process. Why would he hem himself in already when it is clearly years away before this will need to be completed?

There was a rumor that Johnson’s trilogy might be canceled a while back. However, this was quickly denied. It seems as if after Knives Out is over and done with, that maybe Johnson will spend a bit more time in front of the PC and try to write down his story.

It could be years from now before we get any details of what those Star Wars movies might be about, and that’s fine. After all, we wouldn’t dream of expecting Marvel’s Ryan Coogler to reveal his plans for Black Panther 2 yet and it’s happening far sooner than Johnson’s Star Wars movie’s.

What do you think of Johnson’s decision to not speak about these movies yet? Sound off as always below.
