Rob Liefeld Says Deadpool Wasn’t Based Off Of Deathstroke

It’s safe to say that most who are reading this article know Deadpool to be a parody, or what some may even call a ripoff of DC’s Deathstroke. However, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld says that is simply not true. Liefeld spoke at Los Angeles Comic Con recently and was asked if he had based Deadpool on Deathstroke, many of you may be surprised by what he had to say, Liefeld describes in a candid way, how he pitched Deadpool.

“Let me tell you guys how it went: ‘Hey guys, Todd McFarlane, he’s kind of blowing up on Spider-Man. I need a Spider-Man in my book. Oh, wow, so, I also like Wolverine. He’s my favorite character. Black and red, black and red. Can I tie him into Wolverine’s origin? So, can I do Spider-Man with guns and knives?’”

I too was one of the people that thought Deadpool was at the very least based on Deathstroke. One of the biggest reasons I believed Deadpool was a parody, was the Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson thing, and now I wonder how that came about? Other than their names they are pretty different. While both are mercenaries, Deathstroke is more no nonsense and all about the job, where Deadpool is a generally nice guy, with a childlike sense of wonder, he also happens to not have any problem murdering people when necessary.
