As much as we all love Star Wars, if there is one consistent criticism I’ve had of the films, it has to do with the black-and-white nature of good and evil. The fact that they literally have a group of “evil” Jedi (the Sith) whose only goal seems to be power and evil. While a whole lot of fun, doesn’t do a lot to give the world a real sense of validity.
When the concept of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was first pitched fans, they sold it as a grounded war film, a film where the Force’s role would be limited and in which there would be no Jedi (with the exception of Darth Vader). We’ve seen the more black-and-white side of the universe, and with Rogue One, it sounded like we’d be headed to the grayer side of things.
The trailer seemed to back up that claim, and in a recent interview with TheWrap, actor Riz Ahmed, who plays the cargo pilot Bodhi Rook in the film, also backed up the idea of a more morally complex world.
“The film is about complex characters and loyalties and murky pasts. The film is a little edgier, with people making these huge compromises. History isn’t always clear.â€
I absolutely love this statement from Ahmed, and have been hungry for a Star Wars film that shows this side of things. Make no mistake, I love what the films have offered thus far — the spirit of high adventure is something I’ll always come back to — but it’ll be nice to see a more mature iteration of the story.
