Rosa Salazar

James Cameron takes his time on all his projects, and ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL is no exception.

After several years in development, Cameron handed the directing duties to Robert Rodriguez since he is extremely busy with several AVATAR sequels.

Now the project moves forward with Rosa Salazar nabbing the lead actress role.

Salazar was best known for her role as Brenda in MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS. With the MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE on the backburner for now, it frees her up to play the cyborg in this manga adaptation.

Other actresses under consideration were IT FOLLOWS’ Maika Monroe and Disney Channel’s long-time singer and star Zendaya. Bella Thorne, who starred with Zendaya in SHAKE IT UP, also tested for the part.

The manga was written by Yukito Kishiro. Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis adapted it into a screenplay.

The story follows a cyborg created during the post-apocalyptic future. She lost all memories and is found in the garbage heap by a cybernetics doctor. She becomes a bounty hunter seeking to rediscover her past and undergoes a self-discovery.
