Marvel Studios is well-known as a studio with a plan. Sure, these plans could change as they enjoy greater-than-expected success — Phase 3 saw massive changes, and Phase 4 already has two additions in the form of Spider-Man 3 and Ant-Man 3 — but they like to lay out the future with several big projects, as indicated by their big announcement slates. And yet, in spite of all the titles we know of so far for Phase 4, it’s hard not to keep our eyes firmly planted in the future.

With The Falcon and Winter Soldier series currently in production, the future of the Captain America mantle is one we’re all wondering about. We Got This Cover may have our first hint of what’s to come. According to their sources who told them about Taskmaster being the villain in Black Widow, the studio is developing a fourth Captain America film set to feature Anthony Mackie — though we don’t know when this would come.

This would actually make sense. As great as it would be to see Falcon and Bucky continue working together, we do know that the MCU tends to skew more toward continuous change than stagnation. As such, we could only expect such a series to go on for so long before Falcon embraces Cap’s shield. In fact, I’m sure Sam’s emotional arc will follow his embracing the moniker of Captain America, paving the way for his own film and his role in future Avengers movies.

Of course, that previous paragraph is all speculation, but given the rumor, I could see it all falling into place as such. Personally, I think this is a smart move from Marvel Studios and would provide a good way to transition from one generation of heroes to another (we’re seeing similar moves with Hawkeye and Thor in this coming Phase of projects).
