RUMOR: Marvel — Not Netflix — Responsible For Daredevil’s Cancellation

While there was a good amount of sadness expressed when Iron Fist and Luke Cage were canceled within a week of each other, most of it seemed to be steeped in the idea of Disney cleaning house in advance of their Disney+ streaming service. However, with the cancellation of Daredevil, the fan mourning seems to have taken on a whole new level.

Not only does this seem to be further evidence of the grand conspiracy, but given how well-received the show was, it was all the more shocking. But what was the reason behind it? In advance of the show’s release, there were reports of diminishing returns for these series in terms of ratings and overall buzz, and on there were even comments from Netflix that they have a hand in determining whether or not a show goes on.

Now, we’re hearing kind of the exact opposite, courtesy of a rumor from Collider editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub.

“more info I’ve been sitting on. Since i can’t second source this I’ll post this as a “rumor” for now.

@Daredevil wasn’t a @netflix cancellation. @Marvel did it.

I loved season 3 and was all in for a season 4. Disappointing it won’t happen.”

So what does this mean? I’ve been one of the biggest deniers of Disney cleaning house because of their upcoming streaming service since they can’t exactly bring the R-rated Defenders to Disney+, but even I have to admit this is all pretty fishy and damning, if true. So what’s their endgame?

We can only speculate, but once their acquisition with Fox goes through, they will own a majority of Hulu. Perhaps moving them over to that platform would be a better way for them to see some of that superhero TV show money? It really is too early to speculate — especially since Netflix still has Jessica Jones Season 3 and The Punisher Season 2 to air — but there clearly seems to be something going on.
