There has been a lot of discussion about the next 007 films. Not just the upcoming film starring Daniel Craig, but the ones afterward. Conversations about rebooting the character as a minority or as female have been around for a couple of years now. Points between Bond himself becoming a different race or gender or the title of 007 being handed over have been discussed at length. Now, it appears the latter will be the truth.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Captain Marvel star, Lashana Lynch, is set to be dubbed the next 007 in the upcoming film. Daniel Craig will still star as James Bond, but his license number will be handed to Lynch’s new character.

According to an insider, Ralph Fiennes’ M will introduce Lynch as the new 007 by asking “come in 007.” The insider describes the scene as “pivotal” and “popcorn dropping” while describing James’ attraction to the character:

“Bond, of course, is sexually attracted to the new female 007 and tries his usual seduction tricks, but is baffled when they don’t work on a brilliant, young black woman who basically rolls her eyes at him and has no interest in jumping into his bed. Well, certainly not at the beginning.”

That quote is a bit odd because it implies Lynch’s character may be willing to bed with Bond later in the film, but regardless of modern political correctness, Bond has always been known for his consensual flings and this would mean this movie and character is no different than previous ones. It could also potentially mean that Lynch’s character seduces Bond instead, which could be seen as a female empowerment move.

I, personally with no connection to LRM, am not a fan of gender and race switching in general. I’ve had conversations with several minorities that want to see new characters created in their image versus “riding the coattails” of white male characters. I agree with them. It seems disingenuous and patronizing to say a female or other minority can’t hold an audience’s attention or adoration without being an established character. However, voices that differ from those I’ve spoken with are valid and should be heard. Diversity and representation in Hollywood are important, but the path to such things is up for debate.

This conversation is of course at the forefront of our society given the casting of Ariel in The Little Mermaid live-action remake. I have consistently tried to reach out for minority voices on the topic to help form my own take on things. While I am not the world’s biggest James Bond fan, I think this move is completely reasonable, acceptable, and positive.

What do you think of this announcement? If you’re a minority, do you want to see more original characters created or more race/gender swapping? Let us know in the comments below!
