There’ve been rumblings about Ryan Coogler helming the Black Panther film for some time. After the bang-up job the relatively new director did for the film “Creed,” everyone knew this guy was destined for great things. It seemed natural for his career trajectory that Coogler would eventually direct a comic book movie.

Earlier today, Marvel confirmed that Coogler will, in fact, be directing the “Black Panther” film.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the following:

“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family. The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films (‘Fruitvale Station’ and ‘Creed’) easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’  Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”

Coogler’s most recent film, “Creed,” has received a ton of critical acclaim, and even earned actor Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe for his performance as the aging Rocky Balboa.

Without a doubt, getting a hot director like Coogler is a huge get for the studio, as Coogler has proven more than once to bring a definite weight and heart to a movie. Let’s hope he’ll be able to do so for Marvel as well.

“Black Panther” is set to hit theaters on July 6, 2019.
