When you think of Ryan Reynolds, chances are you don’t even imagine Ryan Reynolds as much as you think about the roles he has embodied over the course of his career: Van Wilder, the guy from Just Friends, the dude from Buried, and of course, Hal Jordan. I bet you didn’t even realize he played those characters, did you? Such is the depth of his overall immersion.
You’ll be happy to hear that he brought that same level of craft to the upcoming Pokémon: Detective Pikachu film. Yes, that’s right. The voice you heard in those trailers was none other than Deadpool himself. He had somehow cloaked his voice so that none of us would be able to recognize him, all without taking away from the believability of the character. Now, in a new video he posted to his Twitter account, he gave us some extra insight into the steps he took to bring Pikachu to life.

“I immersed myself completely within the world of Pokémon. I read about [Pikachu]. I live at his height. I tried to lose 182 pounds to match his weight until doctors intervened.”

This is a little disappointing, as it will most definitely deprive him of an Oscar, and it’s frankly hypocritical that doctors didn’t intervene when Christian Bale lost all that weight or when Leonardo DiCaprio insisted on getting mauled by a real bear. Though, rest assured that this film has had an impact on his day to day life.
“I was on my way to pick up my daughters from school when I heard that I got the role. I didn’t show up at school, because Detective Pikachu, he doesn’t know who those little girls are. Who are they?”
Nice to know that he’s willing to take things to the limit. Oh yeah, and a new trailer is hitting tomorrow for the thing. That too.
