Season 3 Of Stranger Things Will Have John Carpenter Influences

Since the first episode, this writer has remained constant in his description of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. To its core, the series is a perfect blend of Steven Spielberg storytelling and John Carpenter vision. The 1980s was a decade where both of these filmmakers experimented creatively with their storytelling.

Spielberg gave the mainstream E.T., Indiana Jones, Poltergeist and The Goonies, while Carpenter gave his audience The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing and Big Trouble In Little China. Their cinematic contributions during the decade helped to define what the ’80s are known for, and those elements are present throughout both seasons of Stranger Things. Now, it seems the influence of one of these men will be even more apparent.

Producer Shawn Levy confirmed while chatting with Italian news site Bad TV that John Carpenter’s work in the ’80s will be emphasized in season 3 of Stranger Things. “It’s inspired by many of the classic action films of the 80s but also by horror,” he said. “There will definitely be the spirit of John Carpenter and other 80s horror directors.” Star David Harbour also indicated earlier in the year that ’80s cinema will influence the third season greatly.

Levy also wanted to assure the loyal fan base that a specific popular game, then and now, is still involved:

“I don’t want to reveal too much but I can tell you that D & D will always be part of Stranger Things. Always.”

This writer’s love for both Carpenter and Spielberg is one of the reasons Stranger Things is a favorite of mine. It captures both the humanity of its characters like Spielberg and gives us the fear and thrill of being faced with the frightening beings of the unknown that Carpenter specializes in.

While there is no set date yet, it seems likely that the third season of Stranger Things will premiere on Netflix some time in 2019.
