Shazam: Director David F. Sandberg Talks About What Drives Billy Batson In the Movie

The trailer for Shazam was unleashed at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend. Whilst the trailer certainly gave us a feel for what to expect from this movie, it did nothing to indicate any of the basic plot mechanics, other than Shazam experimenting with his newfound powers. We also saw a small glimpse of villain Dr. Sivana who would appear to have powers of his own.

What about the character of Billy Batson who becomes Shazam? What are his motivations and drives throughout this movie? Director David F. Sandberg spoke with ComicBook.com at SDCC 2018 and he talked a little about what is driving Billy in this movie.

“He’s trying to find his family… His mom is still out there. But once he gets these powers, he’s just trying to figure out what to do with them and how it works. For that he needs his friend Freddie, who is like a superhero expert, who helps him to discover his powers and how to be a superhero.”

How does he know his mother is still alive? What supposedly happened to her and is it perhaps connected to Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong). The tone of the movie from the trailer looks very light-hearted as one would expect from a story about a kid who gets superpowers. However, at the same time, if it has no heart and no real emotional stakes, then it’s not going to appeal to me personally. Fans online have been so far fairly critical of the trailer that I have seen, and those criticisms seem to center around the comedy tone and the fact the film feels like a superhero version of Big. Don’t get me wrong, I love Big as a movie, but I’m not sure a superhero version will work.

Let’s hope there is more under the hood of Shazam than what the trailer depicts, I like the idea of this movie, I just want to have left the theatre having had more than just a good laugh, but that’s just me.
