Shazam! Director Says Effects On Suit Aren’t Done Yet In Trailer

If you’ve been following the production and set photos of any Hollywood superhero film in the past 15 years, you’ll know one thing — that costumes look kinda terrible in these leaked photos. And yet, pretty much without fail, whenever these photos leak, people freak out about the look of a character.

This same thing happened with the upcoming DC film Shazam!, starring Zachary Levi. Very famously, some set photos were leaked to an upset fandom, who thought it looked like a silly costume. Months later, when the trailer dropped, it was clear that the look of the costume fit the style of the film. So why the difference? On Reddit, director David F. Sandberg gives some extra insight into the costume making process:

“Making suits is hard. Like painting a room you can look at little swatches all day but you won’t really see the effect until it’s done. The color of the finished suit didn’t look quite as expected in some lights (particularly daylight) which is on me since I decided to change fabric very late in prep and there wasn’t time for as many tests. I figured we’d just have to tweak it in post. The first image released though unfortunately didn’t have any post production done to it. That was right as we were putting the trailer together. I figured since that image was out there perhaps we shouldn’t stray too far from it in the trailer. Might be confusing.”

But if you think the look of the costume is 100% done in the trailer, think again:

“…it’s all still a work in progress and we’ll see where we end up. No images (or the trailer) have the finished bolt effect either (it’s not going to be an extreme effect or anything but it’s not just a simple glow).”

Okay, so it doesn’t look like there are going to be any major changes, but considering how far away the movie still is, it’s nice that they’re still looking to fine-tune things.
