Shazam! Is A Christmas Movie, Confirms David F. Sandberg And Zachary Levi

Die Hard (you are so wrong, Bruce Willis). Lethal Weapon. Batman Returns. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Iron Man 3.

Despite the fact they are all action films does not mean they aren’t true Christmas classics as well. More than just set at Christmas, all of these films subvert the joy of the Holiday by pairing it with a truly desperate situation.

Not to be outdone by Marvel Studios, the DCEU (I’m not calling it Worlds of DC or whatever – terrible name), now have themselves a Christmas film (to be fair, Marvel was beaten by old, good DC with Batman Returns). Though released in April 2019, director David F. Sandberg told ComicBook.com at SDCC that in addition to the setting, Shazam! Has other elements that make it feel like a Christmas film:

“It feels like a Christmas movie to me. It’s about family, and finding your family, you have these orphans or foster kids… and Christmas is very much a family holiday, so it sort of ties it all together in that way.”

Zachary Levi, who plays the superhero Shazam in the movie, when he is not teen Billy Baston (Asher Angel), added that the film takes cues from Geoff Johns’ New 52 run, also set around Christmas:

“That was a Christmas story in that issue, so I think that’s gotta play something into it.”

Sandberg added:

“Yeah, and that was the idea Geoff Johns had for that as well, that it’s a family holiday.”

Make sure to hold onto that Christmas feeling for a while, as Shazam! comes out April 5, 2019.
