Shazam! Producers May Have To Move Quickly With A Sequel For This Reason

Nowadays, when you’re making a film, more often than not, you’re not just making a standalone story, but you’re making either an entry in a franchise or a project that will inevitably kickstart a franchise. Captain Marvel is assumed to be the start of a new franchise, as was Black Panther last year. However, in those cases, you aren’t necessarily having to rush to get these movies out the door. You have adult actors who will largely look the same over the course of the next decade.

That isn’t quite the case with a movie like Shazam!, which features younger actors. As they tend to do, these kids will grow up fairly quickly, and if you want the audience to buy them as kids, it helps if they actually look the part, right? What really adds to the pressure is that Zachary Levi’s Shazam is supposedly what Asher Angel’s Billy Batson will look like as a full-grown adult who has reached his full potential. If they don’t move quickly, it’ll be fairly weird for him to transform from, say, a 20-year-old Asher Angel to Zachary Levi. With that in mind, producer Peter Safran was asked about that very idea.

“They’re going to look like Zach does today [in a few years],” Safran joked. “So we’ve got to move swiftly with the sequel, for sure.”

More than any other film in the DCEU, it’s important that they get this movie out as quickly as possible so they can capitalize on kid-centric stories. With this in mind, I can’t help but wonder if they’ll reach a point where Zachary Levi will be playing both Billy Batson AND Shazam, or if they’ll go with the full transformation deal going forward. It’ll be very interesting to see what they decide going forward…but what do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below!
