Shazam!: Zachary Levi Won’t Say How They’ll Handle Captain Marvel Naming Conventions

Shazam is quite the interesting character in terms of his name. For the longest time, he bore the name of Captain Marvel. For so long he had that name that many fans still call him Captain Marvel. However, thanks to a bunch of legal reasons, his name was officially changed to Shazam, which is fitting since those are the magic words Billy Batson has to say to transform.

Given just how much of a fun ride this film is set to be, you’d imagine they’d have fun with those naming conventions, right? I won’t go so far as to say it’s on par with Deadpool in terms of fourth-wall-breaking, but there is a definite self-awareness the film will have over others like Wonder Woman. So, with that in mind, can we expect them to poke fun at the name?

Star Zachary Levi was asked that same thing, and he sadly had the response:

“Honestly, you’ll have to wait until April 5, 2019 to find out the answer to that question, my friend. I don’t know what to tell you. There’s fun that’s had.”

Okay, so we don’t know exactly how they handle it, but it seems clear, based on his response, that they will address it in one way or another. I imagine it kind of like that scene where Deadpool called himself “Captain Deadpool” before settling on Deadpool, where Billy can call his alter ego Captain Marvel before settling on Shazam.
