Showrunner For Titans Talks About The Season Finale Post Credit Scene

WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST SEASON OF DC UNIVERSE’S TITANS

One of the good and bad things about DC Universe’s Titans, in my opinion, was the time the series took to develop the characters. Good because you get a better overall understanding about the young heroes and bad because it was going to take a lot longer to get the iconic team together. Each of the characters in Titans had their own demons that they were fighting, one of them a literal demon.

We got a chance to see in live action characters like Dick Grayson aka Robin, Kory aka Starfire, Rachel Roth aka Raven, Gar aka Beast Boy, Dawn Granger aka Dove, Hank Hill aka Hawk, Jason Todd aka Robin and Donna Troy aka Wonder Girl. But if you watched the season finale of Titans last Friday you may have caught the end credit scene that teases a familiar character that could join the team in season two of the series.

After the credits, we got to see that a very familiar character was breaking out of a Cadmus laboratory, along with a super-powered dog. For DC Comics’ fans, it was obvious that this was Connor Kent aka Superboy along with Krypto. The character should be very familiar to fans of DC Universe’s Young Justice, which features Superboy as one of the main characters, where he is voiced by Nolan North. As a matter of fact, it’s in the first two episodes of that series where Superboy is discovered by the team and freed from captivity. Now the popular character looks like he will be featured with the rest of the young heroes on Titans.

In case you are not familiar with the character. Conner Kent is a Superman clone that was created by Lex Luthor after Superman’s “death” after his battle with Doomsday. Before the experiment could be completed he was freed by the Newsboy Legion and was able to escape. He was created by Tom Grummett and Karl Kesel and first appeared in DC Comics’ Adventures of Superman #500 in June, 1993.

Entertainment Weekly talked with Greg Walker, showrunner and executive producer for Titans about the surprise cameo. But it seems like Superboy wasn’t originally in the plans for the Titans series. Walker said that “It wasn’t totally planned from day one — or maybe it was in [Geoff Johns and Akiva Goldsman’s] heads, but they didn’t tell me. It definitely wasn’t something that we thought of until the very end. I think we knew that would be a direction that would be exciting for the fans and a tease that would be interesting for us as well, and that was the best spot to put it in.”

I agree with Walker that it will be very exciting to see Superboy on the Titans series, he also talked about the fact that they are still planning out Kent’s character and how they are going to keep the same approach that they have had with the other characters that have featured on the series. “It’s still brewing. What I can say is that we still want to take the same dimensionalized and psychologically grounded approach that we do with the other characters and apply that same pressure to Conner Kent and see what shakes out when you put a character like that through that test. You know, questions of identity, questions of powers, questions of your place in the universe. These are all questions that are interesting for any kind of Superman character, and are really interesting for Conner,” said Walker.

A character that has been practically in a test tube his entire life is going to have a ton of questions about himself. Especially one that is related to one of the most powerful superheroes on the planet. It will be interesting to see how they decide to develop him and if by this point the Titans, having gone through their own journeys of self-discovery, can help him become another member of the team. For now, there is no word on when season two of Titans will go into production as well as who will be or has been cast as Conner Kent.
