Showtime Passes On Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Kingkiller Chronicle, Series Now Being Shopped Around

If our analytics are any indication, Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle novels are quite the popular commodity among fantasy fans. While readers eagerly await the eventual third book in the series, there are a couple of adaptations in the work — one of which is a series from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created the show for Showtime, along with Lionsgate Television producers.

Looks like they’ve hit a bump in the road, so to speak. THR is reporting that Showtime has passed on Miranda’s take on the novel series, which has been in development since October of 2017 after the network won it in a bidding war.

So, what does this mean for its future? Well, it’s currently being shopped around to other networks now, and sources tell the outlet that Apple is among those who have been sent scripts from the showrunner and writer, John Rogers.

In the upcoming Golden Age of fantasy TV, Apple remains one of the few networks who doesn’t have a golden goose. LRM Online news writer Cam Clark and I recently had this conversation in last week’s Los Fanboys, and came to the conclusion that Apple would need to jump on the bandwagon soon, and this would be the perfect opportunity.

Given that this abandoning of the series from Showtime comes after its merger with Viacom, it’s possible the decision comes as a result of them having access to a ton of a new I.P. to exploit, so it may not even be a question of quality.

This Kingkiller Chronicle series is not a direct adaptation of the novels, but instead takes place a generation before those events, following a musician named Kvothe, who grows to become a notorious wizard. It seemed like a promising project, so I’m interested to see where it lands. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below!
