Silver Surfer: Adam McKay Has Had Discussions With Marvel About A Potential Movie

Right now, there are still plenty of characters seemingly in limbo between the world over at 20th Century Fox and the world of Marvel Studios. We don’t have long before the merger between Disney and Fox finalizes and these characters originally licensed away from Marvel become ready to use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One such character is the Silver Surfer, who already made his big screen debut in the second Fantastic Four film from Tim Story.

But, of course, it’s time to reinvent that bad boy. There were rumors about the character being in development over at Fox, but from the sound of it, all development has halted on that project as the above deal between Fox and Disney is finalized. So is a Marvel Studios take on the character in the works? Well, possibly. Last year, Vice director Adam McKay expressed his interest in taking on the character, and when asked about potential momentum on that project, he said the following to MTV News.

“There actually has been some discussion about Silver Surfer. My agent certainly woke up. They were excited. We’re in the middle of, you know, backing Vice right now, but, who knows, maybe in a couple months it could pop up. I really am excited about that idea. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Of course, this is nothing official. From the sound of it, they really did just start some overall discussions, but in the interview, he seemed genuinely excited at the prospect. As it stands, we know that no one over at Disney has given Marvel Studios the go-ahead to utilize those Fox-licensed properties yet, and with McKay still promoting Vice, it may still be several weeks. However, there’s a good chance the green light could be given around the same time McKay is done, so I wouldn’t rule it out as a Phase 4 possibility.
