World War I is the new World War II. At least when it comes to movies. By and large, World War II is seen as the war best fit for the big screen, but in recent years, we’ve seen the tides turn in favor of the original Great War. Back in 2017, Wonder Woman had its own take on the trench warfare-heavy war, and years before that saw it tackled in the Spielberg-directed War Horse. Now, Sam Mendes is having his own take in the film 1917.

According to a new report from THR, the Jarhead helmer’s WWI film is jumping into production very soon, and has stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth and Mark Strong hopping on board. Also joining is Game of Thrones actor and Red Wedding victim Richard Madden. The film will follow soldiers experiencing their first day at the height of the conflict. Actors who have also joined the movie are George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Andrew Scott, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan, and Claire Duburcq.

This will be Mendes’ first movie post-James Bond. As you may remember, he is responsible for two films in the franchise: Skyfall and Spectre. Since then, the franchise has changed hands from him to Danny Boyle, and now Cary Joji Fukunaga. Though, after spending time on the big franchise, it’s nice to see him take things to a more personal level.
