Snake Eyes creeps Closer to Filming

Paramount is hot off having apparently created a successful retro inspired reboot for their Transformers franchise. As of this writing, Bumblebee has a 95 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it looks like they’re following the trend of working on a focused narrative rather than a large one.

According to a new report from That Hashtag Show, Paramount is taking a stab at rebooting the GI: Joe franchise. Like Bumblebee, Paramount seems to have decided that the trick to telling a story based on action figures is going retro as hell and focusing in on one character. In this instance, Paramount has decided to focus on the bad-ass solemn ninja Snake Eyes and his shared history with his frenemy Storm Shadow. I personally disliked every single GI Joe movie. I respect the filmmakers for trying, but the Joes never seemed to coalesce on the big screen.

GI: Joe has a virtual endless roster of characters. So why not reboot the franchise with someone we have yet to see get the big screen treatment? Possibly a character like Sgt. Slaughter, a tough, take no s**t drill instructor whipping future Joes into shape at an academy? But then we find out he’s really Zartan in disguise and all he wanted to do was organize the best of the best, then corrupt or kill them, and do it all on the taxpayers’ dime. Methinks it’s because Paramount wants diversity and the chance to secure some of that international dough.

Crazy Rich Asians cost $30 million dollars to make, and has raked in $238 million dollars at the worldwide box office, though it’s worth noting that movie tanked in China. Snake Eyes will not only have an Asian actor portray Snake Eyes, but will also feature lead and supporting roles that are expected to be filled with Asian talent. It’s a great move to diversify and a step in the right direction. As of now, director Robert Schwentke is circling the project. Schwentke has directed The Divergent Series: Insurgent film and The Divergent Series: Allegiant. I am a little bummed this will be an origin story, but beggars can’t be choosers. Here’s hoping the film turns out great. But how cool would a Sgt. Slaughter movie have been?
