Sonic The Hedgehog Finds Female Lead In Tika Sumpter

First there was a Detective Pikachu movie announced. Lately, we’ve been talking about casting for another a film featuring an even more classic gaming character, Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog!

Variety reports that Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) is in negotiations to star opposite James Marsden in Paramount’s live-action/animation hybrid film Sonic the Hedgehog.

Jeff Fowler is set to direct, following the studio landing the film rights to Sonic just last year. Deadpool director Tim Miller is one of the executive producers.

Sonic first officially appeared in a video game in 1991, and the character’s games have sold more than 360 million copies to date. Sonic, of course, is always on a quest to defeat Doctor Robotnik, a scientist who imprisons animals in robots. If we have live-action actors in this film, does that men Robotnik will be played by a live-action actor as well? That could be interesting casting down the line…

Sumpter is coming off the hit OWN Tyler Perry show The Haves and the Have Nots, landing multiple big-screen roles including one in the upcoming The Old Man and the Gun and Tyler Perry’s The List.

Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release on November 15, 2019.
