Sony Release Statement After Breakdown Of Talks With Marvel Over Spider-Man

Holland's contract up as Spider-Man

Yesterday saw some massive (and fairly negative) news when the story broke that talks between Marvel Studios and Sony had broken down over the future of Spider-Man movies in the MCU.

According to reports, the talks broke down over Marvel/Disney looking to take on half of the costs and therefore the profits on future Spider-Man movies. Sony rejected the proposed deal and depending on what report you read, they also went back to Marvel/Disney with various counter-offers which were rejected by the House of Mouse.

As of right now, it means that Kevin Feige will no longer be a producer on future Sony movies. This could signal the end of the fruitful relationship which saw Spider-Man: Far From Home become the highest-grossing Sony movie of all time. Now Sony has posted a statement on social media to clarify their position in this ever-developing story.

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” Sony said in statement sent to various outlets. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”

“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own,” the statement reads. “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”

All in all, it doesn’t look good for the webhead right now. I had theorized some time ago, that Sony would use the MCU involvement to prop up their own movies as general audiences now wouldn’t know the difference between Sony’s movies and the MCU. However, if the reports are correct, which they seem to be, it also does seem like Disney are being a little greedy with the stake they want in a property they simply do not own the rights to.

Of course, the other side of the coin is that Marvel is basically doing all the work with Spider-Man and probably feel like his recent success is an achievement that they can call their own. It is worth noting that Disney was not simply asking for more profits, but also willing to half the risk factor by going 50/50 on the financing of the movies also. This seems to also include other Sony-owned Spider-Man properties as well, such as Venom, presumably, though even that point isn’t quite clear. I still feel like Sony can be at least understood with their reluctance to this new proposal, so let’s just hope both parties can get back around the negotiation table once more.

My main worry is simply, that I do not feel like Tom Rothman (Sony) has the success rate to be the man to lead a Sony Spider-Verse revival. Rothman most recently produced 2015’s awful Fantastic Four reboot for Fox, along with being heavily involved with some of the worst aspects of Wolverine: Origins for Fox back in the day. It simply doesn’t fill me with confidence, but who knows? Perhaps with Lord and Miller running this in the same way they will for Sony’s TV projects it could actually work out?

Ultimately, I feel the complete opposite of the day it was announced that Spider-Man would be joining the MCU, it is a bit of a bummer. What do you think of all this and specifically Sony’s statement on the current state of affairs? Give us your thoughts in the usual spot below as always.
