Sony Pictures has released the second trailer for their upcoming origin story centered around the relationship between man and his best friend, Alpha, directed by Book of Eli’s Albert Hughes and starring X Men’s Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Here is the official plot courtesy of Sony:

An epic adventure set in the last Ice Age. Europe, 20,000 years ago. While on his first hunt with his tribe’s most elite group, a young man is injured and left for dead. Awakening to find himself broken and alone — he must learn to survive and navigate the harsh and unforgiving wilderness. Reluctantly taming a lone wolf abandoned by its pack, the pair learn to rely on each other and become unlikely allies, enduring countless dangers and overwhelming odds in order to find their way home before the deadly winter arrives.

The family friendly tone of this trailer, along with its tagline “experience the incredible story of how mankind discovered man’s best friend”, is noticeably different from the harder edged first one released last July, which focused more on the action and survivalist aspects of the story.

I don’t know about you, but I’m just not feeling it with this one. While the first trailer did nothing to excite me as a filmgoer, it at least looked like something that I could watch. Now that I have seen the second trailer, it feels more like a mashup of  Turner and Hooch and 10,000 BC, only featuring more wolves and less Tom Hanks.

What are your thoughts on this trailer? Are you looking forward to seeing the movie?

Alpha is scheduled to be released on August 17.
