Earlier this month, there were rumors that recently cast young actor Michael Barbieri in a role inspired by the character of ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN character Ganke, In the comics, Ganke is best friend to that Spider-Man, Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. Of course, this isn’t the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN continuity, so there would be no Miles Morales, but it was supposedly a character heavily inspired by Ganke. Immediately following that announcement, there were plenty of folks who cried “whitewashing” yet again.
Luckily for many of those fans, it turns out this rumor is false. In a recent pair of tweets from SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING director Jon Watts, he outright set the record straight.
Check out the tweets below!
What The–?! Michael Barbieri was never playing Ganke… no idea how that rumor started… Ok, back to work!!!

What The–?! Michael Barbieri was never playing “a version of or a character based on/similar to” Ganke… Ok, back to work for reals now!!!

So it looks like we’re back to square one on who Barbieri is playing, which is likely for the best for the time being. While the kid undoubtedly has a bright future ahead of him (he’s also signed on to the DARK TOWER film), he only has one feature under his belt as of this point — hardly enough for anyone to judge whether or not he’s fit for any role.
Now that this rumor has been clarified, any thoughts on who else Barbieri can play? Let us know your thoughts down below!
