Spider-Man: Homecoming Cut This Moment For MJ

The Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man is about as different as one could expect from the source material. From the absence of Uncle Ben (or any direct mention of him) to the emphasis of the MCU as a whole, it hasn’t been afraid to make some real changes to help it stand out from previous iterations. This includes the personality and name of MJ, played by Zendaya.

The character no longer resembles her comic book counterpart in any way, with her being a lot drier, a lot funnier, and a lot nerdier than usually portrayed. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, we only got vague glimpses of the character, but in Far From Home, she had a lot more time to shine.

That being said, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding her. She mentions her difficulty in trusting and opening up, but we don’t quite have anything else to go off of. As it turns out, there was a cut scene from Homecoming that gave us just a little more, as revealed at a recent Q&A session by co-writer Chris McKenna.

“There was a moment when they come back from Washington in Homecoming — I don’t think it made it into the movie — where you get the sense where she clearly doesn’t have someone there to pick her up and meet her at the bus and May and Peter offer to give her a ride home.”

“You get a sense maybe there’s some sad home life going on, and I think it’s alluded to in some of the things that she says in this movie. With all that stuff, you never want to lean too hard into it. You want to tell a story with as few words as possible. I think we kept it kind of small and as nuanced as we could.”

I actually would have really liked to see this scene in the film, and strangely enough, it resembles a very similar moment with Flash Thompson, when he asks his driver why his mom hadn’t picked him up herself. Honestly, I would have preferred to see the moment with MJ than with Flash, but it does give him a bit more humanity.
