Spider-Man: Homecoming Director Jon Watts Likely Returning For Sequel

Spider-Man: Homecoming is still a couple weeks from its July 7 release, but already all signs are pointing to this one being another good time in the theaters. Between the high school antics of Peter Parker and the bigger world-building stuff from Tony Stark, it seems like Spider-Man: Homecoming could very well be the best of both worlds. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it looks like it features the Peter Parker we’d been hoping to see for years.

We won’t get a chance to see the film until later tonight, but for now, all the buzz seems to be quite positive. Well, you can count this latest piece of news to that big pile of positives, as director Jon Watts may already be on board for the sequel.

When asked by Collider if Watts was coming back for a second film, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal said:

“KEVIN FEIGE: Certainly that’s the intention for sure.

“AMY PASCAL: He knocked it out of the park. We would be crazy [not to]. He did a wonderful job and the whole atmosphere of the movie, all the things that people like about it are the things he brought to it. He’s really special.”

Watts himself wasn’t quite as sure as the two big-name producers, and he seemed to even be unsure if he was contracted for another film.

“I don’t like talking about anything until the movie comes out… [But] yeah I think I’m signed for two movies.”

Well, you’d better dust off that contract, because it sounds like you’re expected to head back for the film by Feige and Pascal.

Regardless, this is yet another reason to remain confident about the quality of the film. Producers are generally not super inclined to respond so affirmatively for a director who they feel didn’t deliver a solid product.

We can’t wait to see for ourselves how this whole thing turned out.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
