Spider-Man Trailer Analysis – Is Avengers Tower Being Under Construction Important?

In Spider-Man: Homecoming much of the plot centered around the sale of Avengeres Tower, which was no longer being used as Avengers HQ after the group had moved to the new custom built facility. The movies finale was plotted around the moving of all the technology from Avengers Tower in NYC to the new Avengers Facility with Vulture attempting to steal this tech on route.

Since that movie there has been no further mention of Avengers Tower and who may have bought it. We could be forgiven for thinking it is simply unimportant and we won’t see the building again. But in the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home we do see Spidey swinging past that now famous MCU building (see below) and we can see that it is currently under reconstruction. This could simply be another in a long list of Easter eggs within the trailer just released, the question fans have been debating in the last few days is, who has bought Avengers Tower, and is it important?

The question here falls firmly into speculation territory because we simply have no evidence whatsoever that this shot is anything more than a nod to the building still existing in this universe. I can totally understand why fans are beginning to speculate on this as some sort of clue to the future of the MCU, I just think right now it’s a bit early to treat this anything more than a bit of fun speculation.

So with that in mind, what kind of theories are we hearing from fans on the identity of the new owners of the Stark Building? Let’s look through the contenders getting the most attention from fans.

The Fantastic Four

Officially right now, The Fantastic Four do not exist in the MCU, we all know that this is highly likely to change within the next couple of months as Disney’s take-over of Fox nears completion. However, it does seem highly unlikely that Kevin Feige would be starting to plant clues about Marvel’s first family into the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailers when nothing has become official yet. Now, it may be considered an inevitability right now by Disney and as such, they have approved Feige to start sowing the seeds for The Fantastic Four. Though I would have honestly thought that a reveal like this, even if just a hint, would be something they could have added in to the final movie which will be released after the deal goes through. More on that later on.

Again, there is literally nothing to suggest that The Fantastic Four have had plans made for them and Marvel has already decided to have them make their home in the former Stark Tower. But of course, fans are fans, and they are all well aware that The Fantastic Four always had their own iconic building in the middle of New York City in the comics and cartoons. Would this be a good use of a building that Marvel always need to include in future New York shots? Of course, it would, fans would love it, it could even be renamed the Baxter Building, but even better would simply be having the former Avengers logo replaced with a 4. It’s a great idea and we all want to see what Feige and co can do with The Fantastic Four, but again I think it’s a little early to get hopes up on this one.

Norman Osborn

Ah, the Osborn debate still runs wild in fandom. After all of Sony’s previous Spider-Man movies focussing on the Osborn’s, fans felt like Marvel made the right movie with Homecoming to have no mention of the infamous Mr Osborn. But I suppose I count myself as one Spider-Man fan who believes that this is a place Marvel should eventually take Spider-Man to. I was not a fan of Sam Raimi making the Green Goblin the first real villain that his Spider-Man faced, I was even less happy when they made Harry the Goblin in the second movie of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. I was always of the opinion that this was a story for later into the tales of Spider-Man.

Superhero movies pre MCU always did the same thing, pick the heroes most famous villain and start with that, the look for the next biggest villain for the sequel and so on. I would love Marvel to build up to Green Goblin across many movies, begin with Osborn existing, then build a friendship between Harry and Peter post-high school and even perhaps a respect between Peter and Norman. Norman could then get more and more shady and involved until he finds himself in a situation where the Green Goblin is created. I think it would be a damn shame to see Spider-Man’s run in the MCU end without getting to Osborn and the Goblin, because for me Sony dropped the ball with this character in all their movies.

So is it possible that Oscorp could be the new name appearing on the former Stark Building? Again it’s quite possible, but there is nothing to point to this being the case. At this point, it’s simply wish-fulfillment on the part of fans, and don’t get me wrong, I’m right there with fans hoping for this outcome. But hope without any real evidence is simply fantasy and not worth getting hyped about.

SHIELD

We think that after whatever happens in Avengers: Endgame, it leaves the MCU with a once again active and official SHIELD. We know that Spider-Man is wearing SHIELD badges on one of his suits from set leaks, and it appears like Fury is back once again recruiting Superheroes to deal with threats SHIELD cannot. But we cannot say for certain exactly how things will play out in the movie. It’s not very exciting, but this could be a very simple way for the MCU to continue to acknowledge the existence of this skyline landmark without having to plan anything too elaborate. Though if they are getting to the point of wanting to be rid of the building for continuity reasons then the easiest answer would be to simply have it be destroyed in some way in one of their movies.

The fact they continue to show it and keep evolving it from its original state makes me think they want it to have some sort of purpose down the line, even if that goal will take some time to be realized.

Conclusions

Well, we don’t really have any conclusions, because we don’t know if this is even a thing or not. What we can say is that, if a post-credit scene gets filmed later for Far From Home, and simply shows a new name going on the top of that building, it would be a fantastic little stinger worth sticking around for.

Imagine we see Spider-Man swinging through New York again and he swings past the old Stark Building and out of shot, as the camera stops and we see the building with either a 4 or an Oscorp sign now being on the side of the building. That’s the kind of shot Marvel knows sends fans into overdrive and if they don’t do something like this, I’d call it a bit of a wasted opportunity. Seeing a SHIELD logo, or really any other kind of logo on the building just wouldn’t have the same punch.

But let’s be clear once again, I’d love to see this as a tease, I’m sure most of you would love to see one of these things teased as well. But realistically unless Marvel decides to announce what is happening with Stark Tower themselves, we won’t know until we see Spider-Man: Far From Home, and even then it may not be mentioned in the movie after all.

I do think that after initially not being that impressed by it, the trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has proved to be one of the most interesting and Easter egg filled trailers Marvel has ever released. It seems every day we find more clues to pour over and frankly that’s what we love, so bring it on Marvel, bring it on.

What do you think of the Avengers Tower Speculation, is there anything in it and if so who would you like to see take up ownership of the building? Share any ideas you have in the usual place below.
