Spider-Man Writer Thinks It’s Weird Fans Are Supporting Disney In Spider-Man Tug Of War

More Barside Buzz rumors on the Spider-Man 4 disagreement between Sony and Marvel.
I’m sure you know the story by now, Spider-Man is officially (unless a late deal can be struck) no longer a part of the MCU as Sony and Disney cannot seem to agree on a deal going forward. Of course, fans are mostly siding with Disney in the process, and whilst morally that might not be the best standpoint to take, I absolutely understand why this is happening.
However, the writer of the original Spider-Man movie David Koepp thinks it’s weird that fans are siding with Disney on this, he spoke to Den Of Geek recently and said the following when asked about the break-up of Disney and Sony.
“I’ve read a few articles about it, yes. I understand both sides. Disney wants what it wants, and obviously it’s used to acquiring and controlling. But I understand Sony’s point of view better: ‘But wait, it’s ours. We own it. You can’t just have half of it. You can’t just take it.’ So it’s a tough situation. And I think certainly the last couple of Spider-Man movies have been terrific. But the animated film that they did without Disney’s involvement was, you know, even more terrific. What’s weird to me is those Marvel movie fans who are quick to spring to Disney’s defence like they’re a plucky underdog who needs to be defended. [laughs] They are not a plucky underdog.”
See, I think Koepp is looking at this like someone working in the movie industry and not as a fan. Fans just don’t care who owns what property, or who makes the most or least money in a deal. Sorry, but they just don’t care. That’s not to say they are ignorant of the process and the fact that movies are made for profits. It’s just a simple case of fans want Spider-Man in the MCU, Disney makes and owns the MCU, recently Sony hasn’t had the best track record with live-action Spider-Man movies. That’s the long and short of it and honestly is it really weird to see that point of view, to put yourself in the shoes of those fans, who simply want to see Spider-Man integrated into the MCU? I don’t think it is and while I can see Koepp’s position, I don’t think this was ever about the plucky upstart for fans in any way.
