Spoiler-Free Avengers: Endgame Review: A Wholly Satisfying Conclusion

Avengers: Endgame is the latest chapter within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) which brings to a close a journey through 22 films. After experiencing the effects of Thanos’ decimation in Avengers: Infinity War, the heroes are shattered and in tatters. As Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), cope with their newfound situations, a glimmer of hope at a way forward emerges.

What works in Avengers: Endgame is the incredible mastery of completing the narrative on such an epic scale. Long-time fans of the MCU will find their loyalty severely rewarded as directors Joe and Anthony Russo find a way to conclude the journey that began all the way back with Iron Man with a new story full of twists, turns, surprises, humor, and heart. The cast is all excellent, each with the opportunity to showcase how well they’ve gotten to know their comic book counterparts. It would be unfair to call out any one particular performance as they are all memorable in their own way, and collectively have refined what it means to be part of an excellent ensemble.

While Avengers: Endgame will undoubtedly leave Marvel fans incredibly happy, for those not caught up with the MCU, the references and nuances are going to go unnoticed and underappreciated. Avengers: Endgame is long. And while the film makes use of every minute of its 182-minute runtime, that’s going to be a lot to sit through for the uninitiated. This is not the film to begin an MCU journey, and it’s certainly not going to convert anyone that hasn’t enjoyed the previous entries.

This review is purposely light on specifics and with a completely transparent intention—Avengers: Endgame is a film one should see knowing as little beyond one core fact: it is a fantastic, satisfying ending to the story the filmmakers wanted to tell. In a few weeks, LRM Online will undoubtedly share some in-depth insights and opinions, but those are simply impossible to convey until the vast majority of people have experienced this movie. But, to summarize, Avengers: Endgame comes with the highest of recommendations.
