Star Trek: William Shatner Defends R-Rated Tarantino Movie

I never would have thought that I’d be seeing the worlds of Quentin Tarantino and Star Trek collide, but last year, those worlds came together in a rather unexpected form. Tarantino had made random comments about his potential idea for a Star Trek film, and from there, I thought we’d heard the end of it. However, J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot got in touch with Tarantino, and have since fleshed out a script, and we’re waiting on Tarantino’s thoughts.

But, of course, as with all things Tarantino, his stories often comes with some strings attached — namely violence and language. Lots of violence. Lots of language. You can’t really have a Tarantino film without it, and recently, Tarantino expressed his desire that this film be rated R if it did actually happen.

Some fans aren’t happy with that. To them, the use of language and violence aren’t really cohesive with the idea of Star Trek…but do you know who disagrees with that? Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, who said:

“Why are people plotzing about this? It’s my understanding that Star Trek Discovery has used expletives in some episodes. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Why aren’t people melting down over that?”

And Shatner does have a point. Discovery has indeed used some harsher language in it, and it did feature a more violent and dark style than other series. However, I think I’d say the violence and language in that show is in perfect accordance with the show itself and its DNA. The concern I think many have is that the language and violence will overwhelm the style, turning it into something completely different.

But what do you think? Is this a concern you have? Let us know your thoughts down below!
