Star Wars: Daisey Ridley Says Episode IX Was Going To Be Very Different Under Colin Trevorrow

Ever since The Force Awakens hit theaters there have been complaints about the Sequel Trilogy. People thought TFA was too much of a rehash of A New Hope and the amount of dissent around The Last Jedi could fill the entirety of  LRM’s servers. One thing for certain though, the whole future of Star Wars rides on the back of  The Rise of Skywalker. Yes, I know they’ve already started on the next trilogy of films, from the guys that brought us Game of Thrones, but if TRoS fails…

J.J. Abrams started the ST with TFA and had turned in a treatment, or at least an outline, for the next two films. Originally, Colin Trevorrow was set to direct Episode IX but “creative differences” saw that his vision would never be seen. According to Daisy Ridley, who stars as Rey in the new films, his vision would have been different from what we’ll be getting in December.

She spoke with the Happy Sad Confused podcast and gave vague answers to questions about the Trevorrow version. She tells a story of going out to dinner and seems to accidentally say that Trevorrow filled her in, but then skirts around specific confirmation of said knowledge.

“And he did sort of tell me and sort of not… Actually, no we had gone for dinner and stuff, we went for dinner with Michelle [Rejwan], who is a producer. So I sort of knew. I think everything happens for a reason I guess.”

It’s no surprise his vision differs from what we’re getting. Otherwise he’d still be on the project. I wonder how much of his leaving the project had to do with the direction of The Last Jedi. Did Trevorrow’s vision of Episode IX not mesh with what Rian Johnson did in VIII? There have been past reports that he really wanted to keep Luke Skywalker alive for his film. Given how divisive TLJ has been, I wonder if Disney would change it if they could. Well, some rumors seem like they will change it retroactively through TRoS.
