Star Wars: Director Deborah Chow Reflects On How Mandalorian Experience Prepped Her For Obi-Wan

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for latest episode of The Mandalorian.

This past weekend, audiences were treated to what was arguably the strongest episode yet of the Disney+ original series The Mandalorian. The episode saw the titular Mandalorian work against his benefactors and steal back the Baby Yoda they had in their captivity for unknown reasons. In doing so, he seemed to have won back the honor of his fellow warrior brethren, who helped him escape the planet.

It was easily the most emotional episode yet, and one that featured more than him sort of going from one place to another with very little dialogue in between. It represented the most emotional nuance the series has had yet, and director Deborah Chow was able to execute it wonderfully.

Speaking with The New York Times, Chow discussed her time on The Mandalorian and how it prepped her for the upcoming Obi-Wan series, which she has been named a director of.

“One of the biggest benefits is that I just spent the last year in the Star Wars universe and I had great mentors, coming in under Jon (Favreau) and Dave (Filoni),” said Chow. “Absorbing that, I feel, was the best training I could have had to take on the next one.

Chow continued, “So much of it just feeling it and understanding it, on an instinctual level, to know what’s right and what’s wrong with it. And there’s so much knowledge — every prop, every costume is important. Every detail really matters.”

But if you were hoping for more Baby Yoda…fat chance.

“I don’t think the baby (Yoda) will be coming with us on that one,” Chow said. “I think the baby steals the show.”

Without a doubt, Baby Yoda has stolen the show. Initially, I had planned on keeping the character out of article headlines because of his spoilery nature, but with the internet being the internet, it’s something pretty much everyone has been spoiling anyway.
