Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Has A Ship Designed By Colin Trevorrow For His Version Of Episode IX

By now everyone probably knows the story of Colin Trevorrow and Star Wars: Episode 9, the director of Jurassic World was all set to direct the final instalment of the sequel Star Wars trilogy until he wasn’t. For whatever reasons Trevorrow was removed from the project and Lucasfilm instead went back to JJ Abrams who made The Force Awakens for them to cap off this trilogy.

Now thanks to Collider we have learned that there is still a lasting memory of Trevorrow’s version of Episode 9 in the Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge section of Disneyland. The outlet had heard that the TIE Echelon full size ship model from the theme park was actually designed by Trevorrow and his team whilst they were still working on Episode 9 as it was then. You can check out a picture of that ship below.

Of course, a theme park like this takes years and years to plan and design, so when they came to Trevorrow to design a ship, he was still the attached director of the movie. The outlet contacted Trevorrow for comment and after confirming this was indeed true, they questioned Trevorrow further on how this came about.

It was just a natural part of the process. The Imagineering team asked us to develop a new ship for the park while we were designing the film. I took it pretty seriously—it’s not every day you get to be a part of something like that. They let me see what they were working on, so I got to see what Galaxy’s Edge was going to be. I think what they’ve created is incredible. It’s such an immersive experience.

They then asked if this design was something they planned to use in the movie or just for the park?

It was part of an upgraded First Order fleet. An armed troop transport—the equivalent of a Blackhawk stealth helicopter. We wanted it to evoke memories of earlier ships while still being its own thing. If you look at the elements, it’s kind of a hybrid of designs from VII and VIII, with some familiar elements from OT Tie Fighters like Vader’s Advanced x1. There’s a lot of history in it.

Finally asking if Trevorrow could describe the scene the ship was used in, he unsurprisingly responded,

I’m pretty sure you know the answer to that, but I respect the question. Honestly, I’m just proud to have been a part of it. I love that ship. Put my ashes in it, man.

I was never a fan of Trevorrow being given Star Wars: Episode 9, simply because there was nothing I saw in Jurassic World that told me he was capable of pulling it off. But of course, we will never know, as it will be firmly JJ Abrams vision of Episode 9 that we will see in The Rise of Skywalker this December. I do hope one day years later, when there is no need for secrecy, Trevorrow will open up about what his own vision of Episode 9 was, simply for pure curiosity if nothing else.

I guess we will find out whether Lucasfilm made the right call by how well The Rise of Skywalker is received by critics and fans alike. You’ll be able to catch LRM‘s hot take on it on the day of release. We are planning a special The Last Call Podcast as soon as we have all seen the movie, though making this work from two different ends of the Atlantic Ocean will present its own time zone issues, we will work it out somehow. Please check out our previous The Last Call Podcasts where we have reviewed and discussed each Star Wars movie up to Solo chronologically thus far. This weekend we watch Rogue One, and we carry on one per month until Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker in December.
