Star Wars: John Boyega Says Fan Conflict Is The Most Stupid Thing In The World

The Star Wars fandom is currently split, it’s hard to gauge exact percentages, but my feeling is that more than half of the fans that are active online in any way were very unhappy with the previous Skywalker Saga movie The Last Jedi. Since its release fans seems to have gone one of two ways, and either loved it or hated it, and we thought it was more like a 50/50 split, but I feel the more time that passes, that percentage of those on the negative side seems to be going up and there are fewer fans defending Rian Johnson’s movie and more jumping on the dislike bandwagon.

We seem to write an article about this divide once a week here at LRM and still the debate never seems settled between ourselves either, but that’s’ because there is always something new which adds more fuel to the fire. John Boyega, one of the stars of the sequel trilogy has certainly added some fuel to this fire himself recently, he spoke about some disappointment he had in The Last Jedi (I’ll share that info again below), but now speaking with Variety to promote The Rise of Skywalker, Boyega has said that he thinks this fan war that is going on is pretty stupid. Here is what Boyega said when asked about some of the fan expectation for this series and the final movie.

“Yeah, there’s like Reylos, for Rey and Kylo Ren. Navigating that for me has been interesting, because I love all of Star Wars. And I think that Star Wars should be a hub for imagination and it should be an opportunity for you to be able to expand on the characters how you see fit. What I don’t like is the conflict between ‘ships. I think it’s the most stupid thing in the world. This is Star Wars. It’s a big universe. Someone can be a Reylo and then you know, someone can like the fact that you know, Finn and Poe are together. Someone can like, you know, Poe and Rey together, whoever. It’s Star Wars, you know? Let’s all have fun! The conflict is when I’m like, all right, “Let’s all calm down.” [laughs] This is Star Wars, not “Tribal Wars”!”

Honestly, I feel like the this doesn’t really represent where the conflict is coming from, yes there are (in my opinion) good-natured debates about what fans think and hope will happen, but the conflict is being driven by the portion of fans who just didn’t care for where Rian Johnson took things in The Last Jedi, and most of those weren’t all that happy with The Force Awakens either. The problem with this conflict is that things have on occasion taken a nasty turn as well, like actor Kelly Marie Tran leaving social media because of the abuse she was receiving for playing a character someone else wrote and hired her to play, so what does Boyega think of that?

“Being in this position, you just understand the masses, how the masses think, you know. Through social media, we get to engage, we get to have fun. But at the same time, for those who are not mentally strong, you are weak to believe in every single thing that you read. That’s, you know, it is what it is. I don’t know, for me anyway, when I see that [backlash], I’m like, well, that’s actually not true. But no, it is actually not true. So it’s kind of like [shrugs] it is what it is. But to engage, to connect with the fans who otherwise wouldn’t get a day to day experience, especially during things like the press tour, and behind the scenes stuff, is always good.”

I can assure you this was the answer to the question of Kelly Marie Tran, I’m just not sure what Boyega means here, he seems to not actually give a coherent answer for this to me, is he saying Tran was weak? Either way, there is never cause for someone to attack an actor online for a role they were hired to play and told to play a certain way. Yet, that is exactly what happened with Tran after The Last Jedi and I can’t blame her for removing herself from that platform because of a few idiots that hide behind anonymity.

As for what Boyega said about The Last Jedi when he spoke with Hype Beast recently,

The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if I’m being honest I’d say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. I didn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that’s something that I spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.”

That one certainly got the fans in an uproar and you can check Jammer’s coverage of that story in the related section below, the comments are lengthy.
