Star Wars: Jon Favreau Likely To Become A Lot More Involved In Franchise Future As Kennedy’s Reign Ends

You may have noticed an interesting narrative shift that’s happened over the past week or so. While fans have expressed mountains of frustration over the direction the Star Wars films have taken ever since Disney took over (with criticism peaking with Star Wars: The Last Jedi), many have started to come around for Lucasfilm’s first live-action television effort, The Mandalorian, whose first two episodes premiered on Disney+ last week.

And with that, there has been a ton of kudos given to series creator Jon Favreau, whose mishmash of space opera and Spaghetti Western seems to have resonated with fans. But what does this mean for Favreau’s future with the franchise as a whole?

As we’ve reported in the past, Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy has a contract through 2021, but her actual future at the company seems up in the air. A recent report from THR observed that while Kennedy is a great producer, she isn’t really a creative visionary, and nowadays with franchises, this is something fans want to see.

According to sources from the outlet, Favreau will likely have “a lot to say over the future of Star Wars.” So, what does this mean? Does it mean he’s getting groomed to take over for Kennedy after? Not necessarily, but it does at least indicate that Favreau is going to take some creative control over at least one aspect of the universe in the future, and this would presumably include future seasons of The Mandalorian.

No matter how things turn out though, I do think many of us fans expect to see Favreau continue to be creatively involved on some level. This is a guy who wants to do another Star Wars Holiday Special, for crying out loud, as indicated in the interview below (and who included a Life Day reference in The Mandalorian), so it’s clear he’s got the deep cut knowledge to make it happen.

If he does take the job, however, it does sound like Kennedy does have plans for who she wants to include in the franchise’s future, as she wants to make sure it’s all in good hands. This includes her wanting to secure roles for Episode 9 producer Michelle Rejwan and vet animation (and now live-action) director Dave Filoni.

What do you think of the potential future of Lucasfilm? What sort of chief do you think they should have going forward? Let us know your thoughts down below!
