Star Wars: Rian Johnson On Negative Feedback Plus He Reveals A Spoiler For Season 2 Of The Mandalorian

When it comes to Star Wars I guess directors need to have a thick skin, and none more so than Rian Johnson. The director of The Last Jedi, one of the most divisive Star Wars movies ever, nay, just movies ever has faced his share of fan backlash since his movie released in 2017.

Speaking with CinemaBlend recently, Johnson talked about how he’s changed for the better after such negative feedback coming his way on social media.

“In terms of the bad stuff, I’ll tell you it’s interesting. That’s been one of the really healthy things for me about the past couple of years, is getting exposed to it. Before I made The Last Jedi, I had never had anyone hate me on the internet. If during the course of a year I got one negative tweet I would go into a panic. I’d be like ‘Oh my god, someone out there doesn’t like me. I need to fix this!’ The thing is though, I am really, really thankful. Because what that meant is that my sense of self-worth was attached to the notion of everybody liking me online. And the fact that this process has made me, out of survival, disconnect from that. And also it’s given me a more realistic view of the system that is social media. There’s a lot of great, genuine interaction that goes on. The bad stuff, the systematic trolling, the almost gamified abuse that some people devote their entire online presence to; honestly, once you’ve seen enough of it, you see the pattern of it. It just sort of gets boring after a while. It doesn’t even give me that little negative ping anymore. And I don’t think it’s even my skin growing tough. It’s just I’ve put in perspective. I realize this is kind of a by-product of this social Twitter system. There’s going to be some degree of people where this is their hobby, basically. So overall I found it made me adjust to social media where I’m seeing it and using it in a healthier way.”

I’ll never condone any personal attacks against Rian Johnson, and I was not a fan of The Last Jedi. At the end of the day, he didn’t set out to make a movie so divisive, he made a movie he believed in and felt was right. I personally didn’t like his take and some other fans agree, feel free to criticise the movie constructively, hell, I have, but messaging the guy on social media, the thought never crossed my mind.

Interestingly, earlier this week we covered a story where Johnson said he would be keen to direct and episode of The Mandalorian Season 2, you can find the details below in the related section. However, Johnson may have also revealed a small spoiler for Season 2 also.

**Warning SPOILERS for The Mandalorian Season 2 follow**

Here is what Johnson said about the famous Baby Yoda when talking with The Wrap.

“He’s amazing! I visited the set of ‘The Mandalorian’ a month ago, and I spotted Baby Yoda in the corner and the producer shot me a look as if to say, ‘you can’t say a word!’ I’ve been holding that secret in my heart for forever now. And the memes are amazing. I’m very pro-Baby Yoda.”

Here’s the thing, if he visited the set of The Mandalorian a month ago, then he was visiting the set of Season 2, so essentially Johnson has revealed that Baby Yoda is not a Season 1 only type of deal and that the loveable little runt will indeed show up in Season 2.
