Star Wars: Rogue One Writer Defends The Last Jedi Director

Yeah, I know. We always end up here, don’t we? No matter how far away we are from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, all roads seem to point directly back there. And I won’t lie. I like talking about this movie because it’s one of my favorite Star Wars movies to date, easily. Add in my love of film discussion and you have a perfect storm since every piece of news that comes out interests me on some level.

This newest one comes courtesy of the folks over at Jedi News. The British outlet had a chance to sit down with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-screenwriter Gary Whitta, and in their discussions came the inevitable The Last Jedi comment regarding the fans really lashing out against The Last Jedi. Whitta came to The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s defense.

“I think what you mean by that when you say “the fans” is actually “a very noisy minority of fans”. Look, I would not necessarily have made every choice that Rian made because I’m not the same person or writer or fan that he is, but I respect and admire and appreciate and support every choice he did make. The film he wrote is far braver and more mature and more challenging than I could ever have written. I suspect that I would have written a more fan service-driven film that would have appeased some of that noisy minority but ultimately would have been a lesser and less important film because of it. Frankly I’m disgusted by the treatment that Rian has received, he’s not just one of the most talented film-makers working today but one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet in any walk of life, and both he and the film he made deserve far better.”

It’s an interesting quote from Whitta, especially the part about what he’d do with the movie. If you look at Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it’s a film that seems to have been much better received by fans, and I’d argue it’s at least partially because it really does scratch that fan service itch.

While I won’t say The Last Jedi haters have no reason to dislike the movies (no movie is perfect, no matter how much I love it), it does seem to me that a lot of core problems had to do with the movie actually taking risks and taking the series in a direction they didn’t want to go in.

I’m sure plenty of you disagree (and I’m sure many of us had had plenty of back-and-forths in the past), but what do you think of Whitta’s comments? Let us know down below!
