Star Wars: The Last Call Podcast, Why The Old Republic Is The Perfect Setting, And Amazing News For Gamers | The Cantina

Welcome back to The Cantina where we definitely serve your kind. I’m your bartender Kyle Malone and I’m serving up tall glasses of nothing but Star Wars.  By now you know I am the dedicated, well versed in the EU, experienced gamer, and open-minded fan this world needs. I see the flaws in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but also the great moments too. I know the importance of The Empire Strikes Back but see how strong Return of the Jedi is. I see that the prequels… well… we’ll get there… maybe. There’s nothing more satisfying than a great Star Wars story, and I want more!

Recent News and Rumors

This week we received two rumors that made me very happy. The first rumor deals with the Star Wars movies from the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) and its timing, and the second one relates to the possibility of LucasFilm Games/LucasArts making games again.

We all knew that Benioff and Weiss were working on a series of films set in the Star Wars universe. We also figured that they would not be taking on the Skywalker bloodline. The big question was when this movie would take place. Well, according to Star Wars News Net the first film will be set in the era of the Old Republic. The source told SWNN:

“It is not the Rian Johnson trilogy, it is the Game of Thrones guys’ first movie, and it is set during the Old Republic, as Disney wants to open up the Star Warstimeline and appeal to a more ‘Game of Thrones‘ style audience.”

“So the timeline is hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.”

“Filming starts in the Fall and art departments are in design phases now as the script is being finalized. That is all I know but I am 95% confident that this is accurate.”

Sound exciting? It should. Let me start by saying I don’t want a retelling of Revan or Bane. I have been a firm believer that the EU stories are great but don’t need to be turned into movies page for page, shot for shot. This setting is perfect to borrow elements from the EU but to create something new and never seen before. Being this far in the past the filmmakers will not be beholden to anything other than space, Jedi, Sith, and lightsabers. This type of freedom can allow a lot of creative play.

This series of films could also jump-start more fulfilling stories for the current line of books. A fatal flaw, in my opinion, of the new canon books, has been Disney’s refusal to let anything drastic happen in them. They seem so afraid to let the authors tell a story that may work as a show or movie instead. This makes them boring. Jumping this far back could give writers more breathing room.

If they do decide on using Bane and Revan, something that may happen as Disney tries to pay more fan service, then I hope they take liberties with the stories themselves and put those characters in new situations no one has seen. I would really like to see a fresh take on the Hyperspace and Sith Wars from the EU. I will admit that a story from the point of view of the “bad guys” would be very interesting to see.

Speaking of Jedi Knights and the Old Republic, it was recently brought to light that Disney and LucasFilm are opening positions for game development at LucasFilm Games. This is great news for fans that have been left bruised and broken by EA’s Battlefront games, lack of development on new titles, and cancellations of previously announced games. PCGamesN reported on the many positions that are opening for the express purpose of creating interactive products for LucasFilm properties. They did not say if EA would continue to make licensed games or if LucasArts Entertainment would spin back up, but the writing is on the wall… We’re going to get more games from people that may actually care about the source material.

Besides a new X-Wing flight/combat simulator, I would love to see a new real-time strategy game that combines the political management of Star Wars: Rebellion with the exploration of Stellaris, and space combat of Homeworld II. I know there are a lot of fans that want to see a sequel and/or HD remake to the Knights of the Old Republic games. I am not against that idea either.
