Star Wars: The Last Jedi Didn’t Derail The Story He Set Up, Says J.J. Abrams

Even as someone who loved Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I did kind of get the sense that director J.J. Abrams and director Rian Johnson didn’t really communicate with one another about where the overall story was going. Based on comments from them and comments from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, it sounded like she let them have free rein on whatever vision they had in mind.

Though while it does sound like they weren’t communicating with one another, one can’t help but wonder whether or not the events in The Last Jedi derailed the story J.J. Abrams was setting up in The Force Awakens. However, as he revealed to E.T. Canada, that wasn’t the case.

“The story that we’re telling, the story we started to conceive when we did The Force Awakens was allowed to continue. Episode VIII didn’t really derail anything we were thinking about. But I will say that the fun of this movie is that these characters are all together on this adventure as a group, and that’s the thing I was most excited about to see, the dynamic between the characters these amazing actors play on this desperate, seat-of-your-pants adventure.”

Personally, I’d like to believe him. I’d like to believe that Abrams was ready to tell a familiar story to be told in Episode VII and for something more unique to be told in VIII, and I’d hope he was smart enough to know that making Snoke the big bad would have been a lazy and predictable way to go. To me, it means the filmmakers give us a lot more credit to accept something that goes beyond the expected tropes, and it’s something I hope continues in the next entry in the franchise.
