Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson recently deleted 20,ooo tweets. The move comes days after James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney for offense tweets. So what does Rian Johnson have to hide? Probably nothing, and with the current environment, you can’t really blame the guy for wanting to be better safe than sorry. While the move may look like Johnson is trying to keep something awful from coming to light, that likely isn’t the case, as Johnson clarified on the heels of a post from The Mary Sue.
No official directive at all, and I don’t think I’ve ever tweeted anything that bad. But it’s nine years of stuff written largely off the cuff as ephemera, if trolls scrutinizing it for ammunition is the new normal, this seems like a “why not?” move.

Many out on the interwebs believe the move to be instruction straight from Disney, however as Johnson mentioned in the above tweet, he as given no “official” directive. Who knows, maybe Johnson is hiding some awful tweets from years ago, but even though I think the guy makes terrible Star Wars movies, he doesn’t seem like the type, though I had no idea of James Gunn’s extremely dark humor until a week ago.
As Johnson said, with nine years of basically random thoughts being tweeted out, there’s a decent chance something in there would offend someone out there. With such a massive removal of tweets, it doesn’t seem as if Johnson is worried about anything in particular.
