Star Wars: The Last Jedi Is The Highest-Selling Blu-Ray Of 2018 So Far

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has come and gone from theaters, and in its wake, it’s left fandom divided. As I’m sure many of you already know, a seemingly large portion of the fandom has big problems with director Rian Johnson’s vision for the eighth chapter in the long-running saga, and they’ve made their discontent known.

The film went on to make north of $1.3 billion worldwide — definitely not a flop, but also a tall step down from what we’d come to expect from the franchise’s main entries, especially after The Force Awakens set such a high bar at $2 billion worldwide at the box-office. But what would the Blu-ray sales look like? Would this negative reception also affect those numbers?

Sadly, I have no solid answer on that front, but that hasn’t stopped the film from topping the Blu-ray charts for 2018. According to The Numbers, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has sold north of 3 million units, resulting in a revenue of $69.4 million. It outpaces Black Panther‘s 2.6 million unit sales. But I know what you’re thinking: you want to know how it’s doing compared to other Star Wars films.

Well, Star Wars: The Force Awakens far outpaced The Last Jedi‘s sales with 5.6 million units, taking in $141.8 million in revenue, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sold a tad more than Star Wars: The Last Jedi (3.047 million vs. 3.019 million). This would seem to imply that the anger of fans is indeed having an effect. However, it is worth remembering that 2018 isn’t over yet, so there is still plenty of time for the film to take in more money. It’s also noteworthy that The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars film in a decade and the first one to bring the true spirit of the franchise back.

In reality, there are simply too many factors to come to any conclusion about the “why” behind everything.
