Star Wars: The Mandalorian Hires Black Panther Composer Ludwig Göransson

One of the things I have been waiting to hear is how the musical score will work for the new TV show The Mandalorian. As the first live-action Star Wars TV show, I did wonder if it would be scored in a similar fashion to the movies, with basically a constant orchestral score throughout.

For me, the score is very important to Star Wars as a whole and I could see where George Lucas was coming from when he described it as the audience being able to watch as a silent movie with the score telling you who is bad, when you feel suspense etc. Score isn’t that important to some fans, whether in movies or TV, but I guess I’m one of those movie buffs that can love a movie almost through its score alone. I am not musically minded that I know of, so I can’t explain why, but certain scores just draw me into a movie or a TV show.

Star Wars, of course, benefited from having (in my opinion) the greatest movie score composer of all time in John Williams, but Johnny Williams is getting too old to do this much work and Star Wars: Episode 9 could well be his last foray into that Galaxy, far, far away.

Now Lucasfilm/Disney have announced through Star Wars.com that composer and record producer Ludwig (great composer name) Göransson will be scoring The Mandalorian. Göransson’s most recent work you may be familiar with is that he was the composer who scored Black Panther. That score has gone on to earn numerous Grammy and Golden Globe nominations already, not to mention some Oscar buzz.

Göransson also scored Creed, Creed II, Venom, and Fruitvale Station and has worked with music artists Haim, Chance the Rapper and possibly most famously with Donald Glover on Childish Gambino’s latest album.

It will be interesting to see if The Mandalorian utilizes any of the iconic Williams themes for The Mandalorian, but I kinda hope it doesn’t. This is a different side of the Star Wars universe and I am hoping for a far darker take about the underworld and would like a suitable score that matches the tone (that I want personally) of the show.

What do you think of Ludwig Göransson scoring The Mandalorian? Sound off (no pun intended) in the usual place below.
